Making Specialty Coffee at Home

So we love our café sessions, but our wallets don’t, so we want to bring those awesome specialty coffee flavours and vibes into our own homes for some savings.

A question Liberty Coffee is often asked is: “How do I set up a home coffee brew bar?"

There are a ton of considerations, but it isn’t hard to get started. There are just a lot of decisions to make.

First, it's all about the beans. The quality of your coffee beans matters way more than fancy equipment (and that’s where we hope Liberty Coffee’s single-origin and blended arabicas come in!). Freshly roasted beans from a local roaster are a great starting point. Try the full spectrum of flavors from the fruity stuff (such as gesha and wush wush varietals or lighter roast profiles), to the darker toasty notes (perhaps from a classic Brazilian or Colombian bourbon varietal) to decide what you like. Then shop away!

Next, let’s get down to the grind. Get a good grinder – it helps bring out all the yummy flavors in your beans. Watch our for the upcoming blog where we lay out the different grinder types in more detail.

Finally, it's about the brew method. The best brewer is the one you not afraid to use. That said, Liberty Coffee always proposes a simple Hario V60 cone filter as an affordable, space-saving, easy-to-use starter tool. We’ll also be getting into the nitty gritty of this and other drip filters for pour-over brewing at home in a later blog.

If your mind is already boggling, get a simple French press. It doesn’t get easier that and you can refer to the brew guide on this website to get rolling. An upgrade to sexy coffee gear can come later. Enjoy the journey, one cup at a time, and don’t let anyone tell you you’re doing it wrong!
